What to see in Dhërmi: a 2-day guide by car
Dhërmi is more than a beach — it is a 300-year-old village, hidden coves and family-run restaurants you can only reach by car. Here is how to enjoy it in 2 days.

Day 1: arrival, beaches and sunset
The drive from Vlorë to Dhërmi takes about 1 hour 15 minutes via the Llogara Pass — a winding mountain road that drops down to the sea with a view you will remember for life. Aim to arrive in Dhërmi around 11:00 to skip the hottest hours on the beach.
Park in the organised lots near the central beach (typically 300 lek/day). The central beach has a sand-and-pebble mix, crystal-clear water, plenty of restaurants and is the busiest. For something quieter, drive 10 minutes north to Drymades beach — fewer tourists, equally beautiful water.
For sunset, drive up to the old village of Dhërmi (the road is narrow but paved). You will find seven old Orthodox churches and a 360° view of the Riviera. "Folie Marine" serves a fresh-fish dinner with a sea view — book ahead in summer.
Day 2: hidden beaches and the Gjipe canyon
Early morning is the right time for Gjipe — one of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean. From Dhërmi, drive 8 km north to the "Gjipe Beach" sign and leave the car in the unofficial parking area (200 lek). From there it is a 25-minute walk down a mountain trail — challenging but worth it.
Gjipe sits at the bottom of a canyon with 70-metre-high cliffs. The water is unmatched, and if you arrive before 10:00 you will share it only with a small group of overnight campers. Pack water and breakfast — there is nothing on the beach.
Head back to Dhërmi for lunch around 13:00 and spend the afternoon at "Akuariumi", a chilled beach bar with loungers. Before leaving, visit the Monastery of Saint Theodore on the hill — a quiet courtyard with original frescoes.
How to get there: travel options
The simplest option is to rent a car at Tirana airport (Rinas) or in the city. Tirana → Dhërmi is about 220 km and 4 hours with stops. The route passes through Vlorë and the Llogara Pass — both deserve short stops.
From Sarandë, the distance is just 55 km and the drive 1 hour 30 minutes via the coastal road. This is the ideal option for travellers flying into Corfu and crossing to Sarandë by ferry.
The bus from Tirana runs only twice a day and gives no flexibility for the hidden beaches. A rental car is the best investment for two days in Dhërmi — average cost €25–€35 per day in season — and lets you reach Gjipe, Drymades and the old village without transfer headaches.
Which car to pick
For Dhërmi, a small car like a Fiat Panda or VW Polo is the most practical: the old-village lanes are tight and beach parking is priced by size. Fuel use on the Vlorë–Dhërmi road averages around 7 L/100 km — budget €40–€50 in petrol for two days.
If you also plan on Gjipe, consider a mid-size SUV (Dacia Duster, Hyundai Tucson). The last stretch to the Gjipe parking is partly unpaved and a higher car gives you more peace of mind. A Polo will also make it — just take it slow.
Make sure your booking includes full insurance (CDW + theft) and an emergency number that works in season. Our local operators in Vlorë and Sarandë offer 24/7 support in Albanian, English and Italian.
Practical tips for the season
Peak season in Dhërmi runs from mid-June to mid-September. July and August are busiest and hotel prices double — book 2–3 months ahead. If you can travel in June or late September you will save a lot and the beaches will be quieter.
Leaving the car at the hotel overnight is safest — most Dhërmi hotels offer free secure parking. Do not leave valuables in the car during beach hours; petty theft (smashed windows) is rare but not unheard of.
Try "Restorant Pavarësia" for an authentic family dinner — about €30 for two with fish and local wine. Drymades has good breakfast bars from 09:00; a Greek-style coffee with bread and honey runs €5.
