Driving the Llogara Pass: a tourist primer
The Llogara Pass is the most beautiful — and most demanding — road in Albania. 1027 m elevation, 30 minutes of non-stop hairpins. Here is how to handle it like a pro.

What to expect
The Llogara Pass connects Vlorë with the southern Riviera (Dhërmi, Himarë, Sarandë). Maximum elevation 1027 metres, total length around 25 km, and up to 50 hairpins in each direction. Good asphalt but narrow in places.
The view from the pass is among the finest in the Mediterranean — the Albanian Riviera unfolds below like a coloured blanket. This is the main reason half of all visitors to Albania choose a car over the bus: without panoramic stops, the experience is just not the same.
Driving time: about 35 minutes from Vlorë to Dhërmi in normal conditions. In summer with traffic, that can double. Take it slow — this is not the road to rush.
Getting the car ready
If you rent, ask for a model no older than 5 years and consider an automatic if you are not used to manual on hairpins. Low gears (1 and 2) are your friends going down — much more than the brakes. Riding the brakes downhill leads to overheating.
Check the fuel level before starting. There are no fuel stations on the pass — the last one in the north is in Vlorë, the first in the south is in Dhërmi (small, may be closed at night). Top up before leaving.
Check tyres and coolant. The temperature swing between sea level and the top can be 10°C — tyres behave differently in the cold. Above 1000 m the engine also loses about 10 % of its power — do not be surprised if uphill acceleration feels slower.
Cornering strategy
Golden rule: enter the corner slow, exit on the throttle. Brake before the corner, not in it. Basic driving technique, but often broken under pressure by tourists.
Hold your side of the road — tour buses and trucks often cut into your lane on tight bends. If you meet a bus head-on in a tight curve, stop and let it pass first. There is no point in taking a risk.
Use the horn appropriately. On blind corners, a short tap warns oncoming cars. Do not abuse it — Albanian drivers understand the horn as a signal, not as impatience.
Panoramic stops
There are 3 official panoramic stops between Vlorë and Dhërmi, all with free parking and open views over the Riviera. The most famous is "Riviera View" around km 18 — almost every tourist gets a photo here.
Do not park on side bends without enough space — it is dangerous and heavily fined (€50 if police pass). Use only official stops. If you do not see one, keep going — the next one comes within 2 km.
The "Trik" restaurant at the top of the pass serves lunch with an extraordinary view and a coffee with traditional Albanian yogurt. €10–€15 per person. Do not expect city style — this is an authentic mountain inn, not a refined establishment.
Do / Do not
DO: top up fuel in Vlorë before leaving; take a 5-minute break at the top to relieve ear pressure; use low gears on the descent; short horn taps on blind bends.
DO NOT: drive after sunset without good lights (more risk); ride the brakes for 10 continuous minutes downhill (they overheat); take "selfies on the move" — many accidents start there; overtake buses on hairpins.
EMERGENCIES: 112 works across Albania. Our local operators offer 24/7 support for any car issue. Some parts of the pass have weak mobile signal, but in season there are 4–5 police checkpoints where you can ask for help if needed.
