Car rental in Durres

Durres is Albania’s second city and the country’s number-one summer beach destination. Traffic spikes hard in July and August — plan ahead, drive early, and never assume a parking spot near the seafront.

Local know-how

What to know before you drive in Durres

The seafront in high season

The coastal road from Currila to Plepa fills completely on July–August weekends. Drive before 09:00 or after 19:00 to avoid the worst.

Ferry-port pickup

Our operators deliver to Durres ferry terminal at no extra cost on standard bookings. Provide your ferry booking number at check-in so they can match the timing.

Parking at the beach

Free public parking is very limited. Private beach clubs have paid parking (€3–5/day). Hotels with private parking are gold during peak weeks.

The right car for the trip

We recommend: Sedan

For Italian families coming off the ferry, a mid-size sedan (Skoda Octavia or similar) fits 4–5 suitcases and cruises the highway without strain.

Parking: Free parking near the centre is scarce. Try “Sheshi Liria” or use private beach-club parking for €3–5 per day.

Frequently asked

Car rental in Durres — FAQ

How far is Durres port from Tirana Airport?
About 30 minutes via the SH2 highway (40 km). Many operators allow free one-way pickup at Rinas with drop-off at the ferry terminal.
Can I take the rental car on the ferry to Bari?
No — Albanian rental contracts forbid taking the vehicle out of the country by ferry. Use an Italian rental on the other side.
Are the beaches inside the city or do I need to drive further?
Currila and Plepa are inside the city or 5 minutes out. For quieter beaches, head to Spille (30 min) or Golem (15 min).
How much does a daily rental cost in Durres in August?
Around €35–50 for an economy car, €60–90 for a mid-size SUV. Booking two weeks ahead consistently lands the best price.
