Theth and Valbona: a road trip through the Albanian Alps with a rental car

The Albanian Alps mean 2,500 m peaks, stone villages and mountain trails that change your life. With the right car, this is a road trip you will remember forever.

Why the Albanian Alps are the next destination

Theth and Valbona are two of the few places left in Europe where you can still find authentic hospitality, untouched landscapes and 200-year-old stone houses run as family guesthouses. This is not mass tourism — it is slow travel for those who want real nature.

Average village altitude is 700–900 m. The climate stays cool even in August (15–25°C during the day). Forest trails, the Seven Lakes of Theth, the Grunas waterfall, and the Theth–Valbona traverse (8 hours of hiking) are why tourists come.

Season: mid-May to mid-October. In winter Theth is essentially closed (snow-covered roads, restaurants shut). Summer (June–September) is best; spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper.

Do you need a 4x4?

Short answer: not necessarily. The Shkodër–Theth road has been fully asphalted since 2022 and a regular car (Fiat Panda, VW Polo) handles it without trouble. A good SUV used to be required — that is no longer the case.

But: the inner trails of Theth (towards Sheep Path, Grunas waterfall) are still unpaved and bumpy. If you plan to visit only the central village and restaurants, a regular car is enough. If you want to drive on forest trails, an SUV with higher clearance (Dacia Duster 4x4, Hyundai Tucson) is better.

For Valbona, the Bajram Curri–Valbona road is also asphalted. But the trip from Shkodër to Valbona via Koman includes a 3-hour ferry across Lake Koman (yes, the car goes on the ferry). This is one of the most beautiful experiences of the trip — the Albanian fjord.

3-day itinerary

DAY 1 (Shkodër → Theth, 70 km, 3 hours): Leave Shkodër in the morning. The road to Theth crosses the Thora Pass (1654 m) — winding but manageable. Arrive around 13:00. In the afternoon visit the "Theth Church" (1892), the lock-in tower, and enjoy the cold mist by the Theth river.

DAY 2 (Theth — exploring the village): Early morning hike to Grunas waterfall (1.5 h, easy). Afternoon to the Lakes of Peja (3 h, moderate). Stay in a family guesthouse — a rare experience with dinner cooked by the lady of the house (€25/night including dinner).

DAY 3 (Theth → Valbona on foot, or Theth → Shkodër by car): Option A — do the Theth → Valbona traverse on foot (8 hours, fairly demanding, requires return by ferry) and leave the car in Theth with the operator. Option B — drive back to Shkodër and start a fresh trip to Valbona (more comfortable but you miss the experience).

Prices, costs and bookings

Rental car in Shkodër: €25–€40/day for a midsize car in season. Fuel for 3 days: about €60. Family guesthouse: €25–€35/night with dinner. National park entry: 200 lek/person.

Total budget for a 3-day Theth + Valbona trip for 2 people: around €350–€450 (car + fuel + lodging + food + entries). Compared with an organized tour (€600–€800/person), you do it yourself for half the price and with much more freedom.

Book guesthouses ahead — June through August they are full. Two good sites: Booking.com filtered by "Theth" and shqiperia.al/akomodim. Book the car ahead too — Shkodër operator fleets are small and SUVs go first.
